Local News You Can Use
$4.4 Million Dollar Dredging of Bodega Harbor Well Underway! Yeah!
As reported earlier in the Press Democrat by Mary Callaway: Navigation channels used by boats to enter and leave the small port — one of the few available to ocean-going fishermen and pleasure boats north of the Golden Gate — have gradually accumulated wave-washed sediment and runoff over the years. Storms this winter added more mud and debris to the mix as a massive plume of sediment spread south from the mouth of the rain-swollen Russian River.
As a result, deep-hulled craft, including many fishing and sailboats, have been forced to travel in and out of the harbor at high tide to avoid running aground, scrambling regular traffic patterns and threatening access critical for distressed or disabled vessels, according to maritime veterans and officials. Coast Guard operations at the Bodega Bay base also have been hampered.
“It affects everybody,” said seasoned local fisherman Dick Ogg.
Sonoma County officials announced some relief is in on the way for the harbor, where the Army Corps of Engineers now plans to carry out an overdue dredging project this fall. The work, slated to cost about $4.4 million, will remove an estimated 110,000 cubic yards of excess sediment — enough to fill roughly 8,000 dump trucks — that has settled into the harbor since 2004, when the channels were last dredged.
Alfred Hitchcock put Bodega Bay on the Map with his film The Birds
Because Nothing is Sacred, BBC is Set to Remake Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.
Posted August 20th, 2017 by Stuart Conover
But, not in Bodega Bay, in Cornwall, UK…hmmm… Conover writes; “It looks like BBC doesn’t feel that Alfred Hitchcock‘s iconic ‘The Birds’ is sacred and is planning on expanding the story by giving us an ongoing television series based off the film. While Platinum Dunes has had a cinematic remake in pre-production hell for years, it sounds like this one will be based more off of the 1952 novelette which was penned by Daphne du Maurier than the cinematic masterpiece we all know and love.” Read More HERE…

Fish Report
September 2, 2017 Salmon Hit and Miss, Rockfish Limits
Temps are still tolerable along the coast with great rockfishing on tap. On Saturday 9-2 Rick on the New Sea Angler ran north. His 29 anglers took limits of nearly every species of rockfish available along our coast. They had everything from vermilions to blacks, yellowtail and blues, chinas and browns adding 39 lings to 20 pounds. Rick said the weather was dead calm with no wind over a 3 foot swell and temps along the beach or 80 to 85 degrees. We are still waiting on the salmon that were being taken off Ft Bragg earlier in the week to push into the local waters and push soon they will. Rick has lots of space available in the coming week.
Call Rick at 707-875-3344 to book a trip on his boat.
Bodega Red Potatoes, Back from Brink, Find Home at Table Top
Read More Here… by Anna Guth
From the Tabletop Farm Website:
These potatoes are called Bodega Reds. From the 1800’s through the middle of the 1970’s, they were a major potato variety grown on the north coast, mostly around Bodega Bay. Due to blight that killed off the variety, they fell off the radar and no one saw any for decades, until about 11 years ago, when one turned up. It was genetically tested and found to be this type. After a successful seed generation program at the USDA in Washington State, this variety is back in action! We were very lucky to have found some seed commercially this year and it performed outstandingly in the field. Come get some and taste the past! Our farm stands are self-serve, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have two, separate locations: 33 Cypress Road, Pt. Reyes, and our farm stand at Brickmaiden Breads is on the commons in downtown Point Reyes.
