Nature itself is an exercise in recreation! The Sonoma-Marin Coast offers a plethora of activities that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. The beaches and parks offer beach-combing, tide-pooling, hiking, biking, and horseback riding. You can fly a kite, build a sandcastle, skip rocks in the bay, and turn over rocks close to the shore to try to capture the sand crabs! The ocean and bay waters attract sport fishermen, clam diggers, abalone divers, surfers, sailors and windsurfers. The waters are very cold and not recommended for swimming, and beach-combers are warned against getting too close to the treacherous surf. It has a wicked undertow!
Wildlife abounds here! The coast sees 200+ varieties of birds, large harbor seals, sea lion colonies, passing whales, and much more! Gray whales migration occurs January/February and April/May.
The Links at Bodega Harbour offers golf afficionados an 18 hole ocean view challenge designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. that is open daily to the public.
The Russian River offers a dramatically different environment as you leave the coast and drive along the river through giant redwood groves. Primarily a summer recreation area, the Russian River area offers boating, winery touring, shopping, canoeing, hiking, and swimming.
