Scientists find exotic life in ocean depths off Sonoma Coast

exotic life

2 of 9 photos Graneledone Octopus.  Because they live in perpetual darkness, they hunt using sensitive chemical receptors on their tentacles that can “smell” prey. (OET/Nautilus Live)

“On a clear day when the fog lifts, you can see the Cordell Bank Marine Sanctuary from shore, from either Bodega Head or Point Reyes. On the surface, it’s an unremarkable patch of blue ocean. But go 115 feet down, and you’ll find a submerged rocky island, 9 miles long and 4 miles wide, teeming with fish and a riot of colorful marine life.” (click the headline link above the photo for the full article).

Disaster Response Teams in Sonoma County Struggle to Survive

Disaster Response Teams in Sonoma County Struggle to Survive

(1 of 9) Bodega Bay CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) coordinator Linda Stout, right, and CERT team members Shay and Alice Pickton pose for a portrait at Bodega Bay Fiire Protection District headquarters, in Bodega Bay, CA (Alvin Jornada/The Press Democrat)

“The Bodega Bay group, one of hundreds of such teams across the nation established under guidelines by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is the largest team of its kind in Sonoma County. Its 75 members have been certified in basic skills of search and rescue, fire suppression, triage, disaster psychology and other disciplines outlined in FEMA curriculum.

The idea is empowering individuals to secure their families and homes, before reaching out to neighbors and the broader community when first responders like firefighters and paramedics might be overcommitted or impeded from reaching affected areas. Known as Community Emergency Response Teams, these civilian squads also assist professionals if the opportunity allows.

“We are the boots on the ground for them,” Stout said.

The Bodega Bay team, with about 15 years of experience and organization, is the most robust example of a CERT program in Sonoma County, though it is not alone.” (click the headline link above the photo for the full article)  For more information on joining Bodega Bay CERT email:

Fish Report

Salmon Hit and Miss, Rockfish Limits

fish report

Napa Angler, Reed Sherman (12) is happy with his nice halibut.

Rockfish remain to be the “headliner” while those chasing salmon are seeing’ hit and miss’ action. The winds ramped up over the weekend, and party boats were tied up to the docks. The commercial salmon season north of Point Reyes ended this weekend, and Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing predicts another round of solid salmon action off of Ten Mile Beach with the fish holding there due to the huge amount of anchovy schools in the area. He said, “Every time we get a blow for a few days, the salmon school up and can be found once the weather calms down. The reduced boat traffic with the commercial closure will also create better conditions. In addition to the possibility of salmon, our last combination trips have produced rockfish limits to 70 pounds along with ling cod to 24 pounds. We put in over 170 lings on our last three trips, and I was able to work the shipwreck for the third time this year, and the action was spectacular with lings averaging 15 to 18 pounds.”

Powers is already filled during the first weekend of the Dungeness crab season and is nearly filled the following weekend. He is running the combination trips for crab/rockfish for $130/angler.

There is work scheduled at the Westside Launch Ramp to occur between September 25th and October 27th to improve low tide access and comply with regulatory permit conditions. The facility will be reopened in time for the opening of recreational crab season on November 4th. Click here for more information.

Call Rick at 875-3344 to book a trip on his boat.
